Abstract
The U.S. Army is committed to improving the patient care process both in terms of patient "throughput" as well as patient satisfaction in physician-patient encounters. Delays in current medical data collection and administrative processes are two major impediments to achieving these objectives. The Army has determined that methodologies and technologies are needed that enable necessary data collection without adversely impacting patient-physician interaction. This paper presents the system concept, architectural tradeoffs, and operational scenario for HealthTrak™, a Medical Digital Assistant for web-based data collection and management of Computerized Patient Records. HealthTrak is intended to dramatically enhance patient-physician interaction during patient examination, diagnosis, treatment, and consultation through an innovative combination of specific technologies and strategies including process-centric integration, maximal integration with existing systems and infrastructure, wireless web-based distributed data collection, adaptive user interfaces, and a controlled vocabulary for physician-system interaction.
