Abstract
As organizations begin to view their processes as strategic assets and the basis for developing project plans, the importance of process tailoring and reuse has come into sharp focus. Along with this under-standing comes the recognition that organizations need a standardized, consistent way of defining and documenting processes. This paper focuses on process architecture and its importance in designing standardized processes for tailoring, reuse, and consistent documentation. It describes two important applications of process architecting: a project level systems engineering process model and a process asset library. The SPAWAR System Center in San Diego has adopted this process architecting approach and is beginning to derive measurable benefits. This approach is well-suited for systems engineering organizations that strive for agility, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness in the delivery of products and services to the marketplace.
