HUMANE: A Designer's Assistant for Modeling and Evaluating Function Allocation Options

Madni, A.M.

Abstract

Function allocation is a central concern in the design of interactive automation. Despite this recognition in both the human factors and systems engineering communities, function allocation continues to be done in ad hoc fashion. However, recent advances in knowledge-based simulation technology and cognitive modeling have made function allocation a tractable problem. This paper presents HUMANE (Human-Machine Allocation Network-based Environment), a knowledge-based environment that allows designers to postulate and evaluate function allocation options.
